Title :

Classics in Post-Colonial Worlds - an international, interdisciplinary conference

Date :

19th/20th May 2004

Venue :

The Open University Regional Office, Harborne, Birmigham, UK

This conference marks the increasing importance of research on the reception of classical texts and images in the varied histories of colonial and post-colonial societies. It aims to bring together researchers in classics and ancient history with those in other disciplines for whom the reception of classical material is increasingly important (e.g. literature, theatre studies, art history, architectural history, cultural studies). The conference will, through its plenary and work-in-progress sessions, promote debate on current work and will seek to promote further cross-disciplinary contacts and collaborations. Papers from graduate students and newer post-doctoral researchers are particularly invited and undergraduates will be welcome to attend. Poster space will be available for those who are not giving papers but would like to disseminate their work or invite future collaborators.

The conference will be hosted jointly by The Reception of the Texts and Images of Ancient Greece Project (Director: Professor Lorna Hardwick) and the Ferguson Centre for Research into the Cultures of Africa and South Asia (Director : Dr. David Richards) .
