Human resource management (HR) is the management of a workforce. The HR department of an organisation is responsible for the attraction, selection, training, assessment, and rewarding of employees, while also overseeing organisational leadership and culture, and ensuring compliance with employment and labour laws.

In smaller companies, HR's duties may be performed by non-HR personnel. In larger organisations, an entire department is usually responsible, with staff specialising in various HR tasks.

The early forms of HR developed as part of Taylor's "scientific management" through his attempts to improve economic efficiency in manufacturing jobs.
