Narend Baijnath

Professor Narend Baijnath is Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of South Africa (Unisa). Prior to this he served in various management roles at several universities. His experience covers higher education research, evaluation, policy and planning. In 2007 he was a visiting fellow St Edmund's College, Cambridge, and visiting research professor at OUUK.

He has played a leading role in the transformation of higher education in South Africa and in particular, in the development of distance education

Alan Davis
 

Alan Davis joined the State University of New York in August of 2008 as president at Empire State College, New York's Open University.

He also held senior positions at Athabasca University, the Open University of British Columbia, Niagara College, and Vancouver Community College. His work has focused on the policy, organizational and resource issues related to the support of open learning, including online and distance education, prior learning assessment and recognition, and institutional collaborations.

Alan Davis has a BSc Honours in Chemistry from UCL, and MSc and PhD degrees in Chemistry from Simon Fraser University. He taught for 12 years at the University of the Fraser Valley.

Stamenka Uvalic-Trumbic is Chief, Section for Reform, Innovation and Quality Assurance of Higher Education at UNESCO. Previous appointments included Secretary-General of the Association of Universities of Yugoslavia and Programme Specialist at the European Centre for Higher Education in Bucharest. She was Executive Secretary of the 2009 World Conference on Higher Education.

Dr Helen Yanacopulos is the Director for Environment, Development and International Studies programmes at the Open University. She has been teaching courses in International Politics and International Development at the Open University since 2000, and has written online courses for various UN agencies. Her research interests involve issues of public engagement and social justice. She has also worked as an Academic Consultant on various BBC series on International Development and Education ( African School, Indian School, Chinese School, and Syrian School ) during the last five years, and is currently working on the series Why Poverty? Why the Gap?

What is the unique contribution of open, distance and e-learning (ODEL) to social justice?

How far does ODEL promote international social justice or simply further the digital divide?

What is the role of cross-border education in supporting social justice? Is it more likely to promote cultural imperialism?

How can one align market pressures and institutitional values in international ODEL? Are business and development agendas compatible?

What are the Quality Assurance issues in cross-border delivery?

How can different teaching and learning styles be supported internationally?
