You will need to sign in to save these activites.

During your OU study, you will become familiar not only with the language of your course materials but also with how language is used in other methods of communication, such as emails, phone calls and online discussions.

Whatever the method, you should think about the intended audience and the purpose of communication as they influence the style of language you use.

In this activity you will view sample extracts of the type of language you may encounter in OU study.  You will

  • identify the purpose of these extracts (e.g. to instruct, to explain or describe an experience)
  • explore how the style of language (formal or informal) reflects the purpose of the extract and its audience.

Choose an item from the group and read the extract associated with it.
