Commentary

Since 1960 I have been associated with the University of Oregon (where I am now an Emeritus Professor of Psychology) and with the Oregon Research Institute (where I am a Senior Scientist). I have been a Fulbright Professor at the University of Nijmegen in The Netherlands and at Istanbul University in Turkey, a Visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley, and a Fellow-in-Residence at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study.
My interests in personality and assessment have led to studies of clinical judgment and decision-making, the comparative validity of different strategies of test construction, the properties of questionnaire items, the effects of response biases, the measurement of situational vs. dispositional attributions in self and peer descriptions, the differential characteristics of personality traits and states, and the development of taxonomies of personality-descriptive terms. My present interests are indicated by my most recent research grant, 'Mapping Personality Trait Structure', which received a MERIT award from the National Institute of Mental Health.
On the more applied side, I served as a Selection Officer for the US Peace Corps, as a consultant to the Intelligence Division of the US Secret Service, and as a consultant to the Research Committee of the Graduate Record Examination. Recently, I served as the Chair of the American Psychological Association's Task Force on Honesty and Integrity Testing. I am a past-President of the Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and the Society of Personality Assessment – in addition to the Western Psychological Association.
Over the years, I have been privileged to serve on both the Cognition-Emotion-and-Personality, and the Personality-and-Cognition, research review committees of the National Institute of Mental Health, as well as on the Editorial Boards of the Annual Review of Psychology, Applied Psychological Measurement, European Journal of Personality, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Journal of Personality, Journal of Personality Assessment, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Research in Personality, Multivariate Behavioral Research, Personality and Individual Differences, Psychological Assessment, Psychological Inquiry, and the Review of Personality and Social Psychology.
