Massachusetts Institute of Technology, universally known as MIT, is in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was founded in 1861. Its emphasis on applied technology at the undergraduate and graduate levels led to close co-operation with industry.
Since World War II, MIT's educational disciplines have expanded beyond the physical sciences and engineering into the likes of biology, economics, linguistics, political science, and management.
More than one third of the USA's manned spaceflights have included astronauts educated at MIT, including Buzz Aldrin – the second man to step on the moon.
