Kipling was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) in India, and as a Nobel Prize winner for Literature, is remembered for his tales about the country of his birth.
Although not regarded as a management writer, he is nevertheless important for capturing the spirit of his day; he records that management was being recognised by others outside the discipline in what could be termed management's poem: The Elephant's Child (1902).
Some management writers have used just the first four lines as a manager's analysis agenda; why it is important to continue is because verses three and four advocate the need for rest as part of the work process. By contrast, in verse four, the workers are given no rest.
